Repair Foggy, Failed, or Inefficient Window Glass

An Insulated Glass Unit (IGU), also known as dual-pane or double-glazed glass, consists of two panes of glass separated by a spacer and sealed together to improve insulation and energy efficiency. Over time, these sealed units can fail, causing condensation, fogging, or visible deterioration between the panes. Western Glass Company can measure, order, and replace failed insulated glass units without requiring you to replace the entire window. This is often a faster and more affordable solution than full window replacement.

Is Your Insulated Glass Failing?

There are two common types of insulated glass failure:

1. Seal Failure

When the seal between the glass panes fails, moisture can enter the space between the panes. This typically appears as fogging, condensation, or moisture trapped inside the glass and is the most common type of IGU failure.

2. Low-E Coating Failure

As windows age, the Low-E coating on the interior surface of the glass can deteriorate. This may appear as dark, cloudy, or mold-like spots within the window that cannot be cleaned from the surface.

The good news? Both types of failure can typically be resolved by replacing the insulated glass unit rather than the entire window.

What Makes Insulated Glass Energy Efficient?

Insulated glass systems use several components to improve thermal performance and comfort.

Dual & Triple Pane Glass: Two or three panes of glass provide better insulation than traditional single-pane windows, helping reduce heat loss during winter and heat buildup during summer.

Low-E Glass: A low-emissivity coating helps control solar energy and improve the thermal performance of your windows.

Warm-Edge Spacers: Spacers maintain the proper distance between glass panes while warm-edge designs reduce heat transfer and can help minimize condensation along the edge of the glass.

Argon Gas: This colorless, nontoxic gas is placed between glass panes to improve thermal performance without obstructing visibility. Argon-filled units may require special considerations at higher elevations due to gas expansion.

4th Surface Low-E: Available in select Milgard® energy packages, an additional Low-E coating on the interior glass surface can further improve overall energy performance.
